Welcome to Exceed

This is my first issue of Exceed since becoming Chief Executive of Algeos.

Exceed always reminds me why I am so lucky to work for a company which has been at the forefront of healthcare product innovation for over 100 years.

This edition contains some remarkable stories, none more so than former Royal Marine Andy Grant. In February 2009, Andy lost a leg after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan.

Following rehabilitation, Andy has become nothing short of an inspiration – not only learning to walk again but also skydive, ski and even surf. To cap it all, he is the world record holder for the amputee 10k.

Now, Andy’s story has been turned into a movie complete with voiceover from British actor-of-the-moment Tom Hardy.

We also hear the story of Ben Ryan who was inspired to develop pioneering infant prosthetics after his son, Sol, lost most of his left arm following an injury at birth.

Elsewhere in this packed edition, we turn the spotlight on Strathclyde University and its internationally acclaimed centre of excellence for Prosthetics and Orthotics. We also round up some of the fascinating stories from the UK’s leading podiatry schools.

Our Talking Point sees Emma Cowley, a lecturer in podiatry at Plymouth University, give us her take on the recent high profile row over whether companies are able to tell their female employees to wear high heels.

We also chart the latest product innovations, look ahead to BAPO and keep you up to date with other industry events you might want to add to your diary.

I hope you enjoy!

Jackie Fisher, Chief Executive of Algeos
