Chair that puts fizz into your back

A chair made from recycled soft drinks cans which can help people with back problems has been launched in the UK.

The Back App chair combines a saddle seat chair with an adjustable balancing board which ensures people sit with an open hip angle, not at 90 degrees as in a regular chair.

The chair is forward-tilting and moves around to various degrees via a ball at the base. The movement varies from slight to dynamic, putting less effort on the muscles to hold the body upright and relieving and also preventing back pain from developing.

It also gives the core muscles a low level work out which supports and helps strengthen the back.

The chair was invented by a Norwegian who had suffered severe back problems and is manufactured in Sweden.

Music industry manager Gunther Walker, 45, from London, started suffering from back problems about 18 months ago.

He said: “I was diagnosed with minor disc degeneration and a disc bulge probably as a result of not sitting properly at my desk for the past 17 years.

“Since my physio recommended the Back App chair the strain on my lower back has been relieved. I now use it on a daily basis in the office.”

Back App spokesman Mike Dilke says: “Using the Back App is all about prevention as well as treatment. The chair stops you slouching and ensures you use the correct muscles when sitting. It also reduces the compression on the spine which can contribute to disc disease and leaves you feeling much more mobile at the end of a working day.”

The Back App chair costs from £463.
